Destination + Beachside Weddings

In the last year, wedding planners and brides have had to get really creative with small elopements, wedding ceremonies, and gatherings. Despite the date changes and guest lists getting shorter, I have loved witnessing these intimate gatherings, and families coming together to celebrate in the couples’ favorite location.

Thinking about a sunny beachside destination wedding with your soul tribe? Take a look at some of my top tips on how to plan an intimate gathering at the beach.

  1. Time of day is crucial! If you are having a sunny, beach wedding, remember that high temps are not ideal for anyone, especially your grandma or baby niece. Consider having the wedding in the morning, or during sunset. Plus, who doesn’t love a sunset backdrop!

  2. Choose a location based on your style that provides sentimental ties. If you are getting married at a public beach, always check into permit fees, or clean-up charges. You don’t want to any hidden fees tacked on to your budget.

  3. Even though beach weddings are usually smaller, make sure and hire a planner to tackle any unpredictable logistics! What if there’s a seagull attack or great aunt lucy spills vodka cranberry all over your dress? (Trust me these things happen occasionally). You still need help setting up chairs, getting the bridal party down the aisle and help with any permits. This will relieve you of any stress on your perfect day.

  4. Make sure your photographer is very familiar with proper lighting techniques at the beach and tide schedules. There is nothing more beautiful than a sunset backdrop or blue waves in the background. However, if the tide comes in too late and you don’t have much room to work with, you may be swimming back!

  5. I think some of the best backdrops at beach weddings are florals. And not just any florals, beautiful bursts of color popping all over the space. Avoid too much sunlights before you put the flowers out or else they will wilt.

  6. If you’re having a reception at the beach, make sure you have weighted tablecloths, place cards, napkins, or anything that could blow away in the wind.

  7. Provide fruit infused water or a nice refreshment at the ceremony while people are sitting in the sand or directly under the sun. This will make your guests love you as they stay hydrated!

  8. I saw this at a wedding awhile ago, but bring a basket for people to put their shoes and cell phones in so they can go barefoot in the sand and stay focused on you. You can even set out sunscreen or bug spray!

  9. When selecting your menu for the reception, steer away from anything too heavy or that may spoil quickly. Fresh fruits and veggies are a great choice accompanied with punchy cocktails.

  10. Always have a backup plan! Renting a tent is never a bad idea, especially at the beach.
